Computer Maintenance Checklist
This is the checklist that I use during my presentation of maintaining and repairing computers. A helpful companion to this list is the ComputerCrimeInfo Videos section.
Microsoft Security Essentials
This is the latest effort from Microsoft which includes both Anti-Virus and real-time Spyware protection. An additional Anti-Virus should NOT be used if you choose this option.
If you choose not to use Microsoft Security Essentials, this is an excellent free antivirus program that has frequent virus definition updates that install automatically. It will scan all incoming and outgoing email, and is easy to install and configure.
This is my new favorite Malware/Spyware remover. I recommend updating the definitions and running weekly.
This program should be ran weekly on any computer that is on the internet. It will scan for spyware, and then give you the option to delete any found.
This is also a program that should be ran weekly. While this program is very similar to AdAware, it will find some spyware that AdAware will not. It should be used in conjunction with AdAware.
This is a great program that will seek all of the cookies, cache, and temporary files on your computer and delete them. This utility program is one of the very few safe applications to clean potentially unwanted files and it is completely free of cost.
Super Anti Spyware
This software offers a free version that will quickly find some of the most common malicious software out there.
This is an alternative to using AdAware and Spybot. This program will run in the background while you are on the internet and detect spyware as it comes in. It will also update itself automatically. This is recommended for those that don't want to deal with updating and running their spyware on a weekly basis. The catch to this is that it will also block some items that are not spyware, and may disrupt you web browsing. You should NOT install this if you use Microsoft Security Essentials.
Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser
This is a better alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The look and feel is almost the same. This is a better option because most spyware is directed at the security holes in Microsoft's products. This software will greatly reduce the amount of problems that you may have with Internet Explorer. Highly recommended.
This small piece of software is the only current solution to detecting software keyloggers on your computer. You must precisely follow the directions that are presented when you run the program. Warning: This software is very sensitive, and some false positives are occasionally reported.
Neo Safe Keys
A small program that helps to defeat keyloggers on unsecure computer terminals.
Great tool that removes rootkits that take over your computer. I often run this program first on a machine that is extremely infected.
VundoFix is a freeware removal tool for many of the known variants of Trojan including Vundo, Trojan.Conhook, and other similar infections.
Free and easy to use software for recovering deleted files.
Sort of like CCleaner for Windows: A multifunction utility for Mac OS X which allows you to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure some hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, QuickTime, Safari, iTunes, Login window, Spotlight and many Apple’s applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more.
Similar to the Windows version, this program will seek all of the cookies, cache, and temporary files on your computer and delete them.
The current free anti-virus solution that I recommend for Macs.
